Superdrug Brighton Churchill Square: Suspended Ceilings and Shop Fit-Out
- Client
- Superdrug
- Location
- Brighton, East Sussex
Superdrug's Brighton store occupies a unit at Churchill Square, one of the city's principal covered shopping centres. Eastledge installed the suspended ceilings throughout the store as part of the fit-out, delivering the ceiling grid and tile specification to Superdrug's national store standard, with services fully coordinated into the grid and the installation managed within the shopping centre's contractor access requirements.

The brief
Superdrug operates a national estate of health and beauty stores across the UK, and each store fit-out is delivered to a consistent brand specification. For a landlord like Churchill Square, the shopping centre's own contractor management requirements add a layer of coordination on top of the brand standard: access times, loading and unloading arrangements, dust and waste management, and the expectations that come with working within a trading environment where adjacent units and shared circulation are occupied.
The ceiling brief was to install a suspended grid and tile system throughout the store, coordinated with the Superdrug-specified lighting, ventilation and other services above the ceiling plane. The finished ceiling needed to be clean, consistent and delivered to the specification document, which means that services positions had to land within the grid module, perimeter trims had to be neat at all wall and pillar junctions, and the installation had to be completed to programme alongside the other fit-out trades.
What we did
Suspended ceiling grid throughout
The suspended grid was set out from the agreed services layout, with luminaire, ventilation and detection positions confirmed before the first hanger was fixed. Setting out the grid against the services layout is the foundation of a clean retail ceiling: when services positions are agreed in advance, the grid can be laid out so that every luminaire, grille and detector lands within the module rather than being cut around after the grid is in place. A clean services layout produces a clean finished ceiling; a ceiling installed before services positions are agreed tends to accumulate ad-hoc cuts and remedial adjustments that are visible in the finished result.
In a retail environment, the ceiling plane is large and unobstructed, which means any inconsistency in tile alignment, grid level or services integration is visible from a distance. The installation discipline that matters in retail ceilings is consistency: uniform grid height across the full plan, consistent perimeter trim at every wall junction, and services sitting flush within their cutouts rather than sitting proud or recessed within the grid plane.
Services integration
Lighting, ventilation grilles and other ceiling-penetrating services were coordinated into the grid installation. Each services position was set out within the grid module and installed to the specified position before tiles were placed, so the finished ceiling presents a consistent surface with services sitting correctly within their allocated grid cells. The lighting system for a health and beauty retail environment is a significant part of the specification: product display, customer experience and brand presentation all depend on the quality and consistency of the ceiling-mounted light.
How we worked
Churchill Square operates as a trading centre, and the fit-out programme was managed within the centre's contractor access windows. Working within a managed centre places specific constraints on the programme: deliveries, on-site hours and waste removal must conform to the centre management's schedule, and coordination with adjacent tenants is part of the day-to-day management of the project.
The installation was sequenced to progress alongside the other fit-out trades working in the store at the same time. Ceiling installation and services coordination typically run in sequence with the mechanical and electrical trades, and the programme management on this project kept those interfaces clean: services positions confirmed before the ceiling grid was set out, and installation progressing at a pace that kept the programme on track without creating a ceiling scope that was waiting on trades running behind.
All operatives held current CSCS cards and appropriate qualifications for retail fit-out environments within managed shopping centres.
Outcome
A brand-compliant suspended ceiling throughout the Brighton Churchill Square store, delivered to the national Superdrug fit-out specification. The finished ceiling presents a consistent grid and tile plane with services cleanly integrated, appropriate to a national health and beauty retailer's store environment.
The project demonstrates Eastledge's retail ceiling capability within a managed shopping centre environment: coordinating access, sequencing alongside other trades, and delivering to a brand specification that will be verified against the national store standard.
