Specialist metal ceiling installers, established 1986
What we do
We design, supply and install metal ceiling systems across the UK: Hunter Douglas 84R linear and shaped feature ceilings, SAS International tile, plank and bespoke metal. Forty years of in-house fixing across higher education, transport, cultural and corporate interiors.
What is a metal ceiling?
A metal ceiling is an architectural ceiling system using powder-coated steel or aluminium as the visible finish, installed below the structural soffit on a concealed or exposed metal carrier. The category is broad: standard 600 × 600 lay-in metal tiles in commodity office and corridor space; hook-on and clip-on metal plank in higher-specification corporate interiors; linear systems such as Hunter Douglas 84R for transport, education and cultural feature ceilings; open-cell metal grids in restaurants, retail and back-of-house volumes; perforated metal with acoustic backing wherever absorption is part of the brief; and fully bespoke architectural metal in custom geometry (faceted, curved, decagon and polygonal feature ceilings) for one-off public space.
Metal ceilings are specified for a combination of durability, hygiene, demountability for service access and a finished metallic visual language. They suit transport interchanges, higher education, retail flagships, cultural buildings, corporate reception and meeting space, and any environment where the ceiling needs to be opened repeatedly for M&E maintenance without damaging the finish.
When metal ceilings make sense
The decision to specify metal over mineral fibre, plasterboard or timber is usually driven by a combination of factors rather than a single requirement. Demountability matters where the ceiling void above is service-heavy and access is frequent: transport interchanges, higher education buildings with dense M&E, plant rooms and back-of-house. Durability matters where the ceiling is in a high-traffic public environment and the tile face will be exposed to handling, cleaning regimes and the occasional impact. Reaction-to-fire matters where the ceiling sits in an escape route or high-occupancy public space and the specifier needs Class A1 or A2 from the constituent products. Visual language matters where the architect has chosen metal as part of the material palette, typically alongside concrete, glass and timber accents.
A second driver is acoustic performance combined with a hygienic, wipeable, vandal-resistant face. Perforated metal with mineral wool backing achieves Class A absorption while presenting a metal face that can be cleaned to clinical or food-and-beverage standards: useful in transport, healthcare circulation, and food and beverage interiors where mineral fibre's exposed surface is unsuitable.
There are environments where metal is the wrong answer. Most office floorplates do not need the durability premium over standard mineral fibre tile, and most cultural feature spaces suit timber or plaster better than metal as a primary finish. We start every brief by confirming why metal is being considered before recommending a specific system.
The metal systems we install
Hunter Douglas 84R linear and shaped
Hunter Douglas 84R is the 84 mm wide V-Profile linear metal ceiling: extruded or roll-formed panels in long parallel runs on a concealed carrier, with consistent open joints between panels. The system supports straight linear runs at almost any length, curved and faceted geometry, fully bespoke shaped feature ceilings, and integration with linear lighting troughs and services penetrations. Acoustic capability is delivered through perforated panel options with mineral wool or PET fleece backing in the void. We installed Hunter Douglas 84R as the feature ceiling to the BCA Birmingham auction hall, set out as a faceted decagon geometry across the volume to the architect's RCP: a combined architectural and acoustic intervention in a high-occupancy public space.
SAS International tile, plank and bespoke
SAS International is one of the principal UK metal ceiling manufacturers: tile, plank and fully bespoke architectural metal. The standard tile and plank systems install across higher education, commercial office and transport interchange interiors as a workhorse demountable metal ceiling. The SAS bespoke offer covers shaped, curved and faceted feature work where the project specification has nominated SAS as the system. We install SAS on the architect's specification and to the manufacturer's current technical guidance.
Standard metal tile and plank
Standard 600 × 600 perforated metal lay-in tile and 300 mm metal plank cover commodity metal ceiling work in offices, corridors, plant rooms and back-of-house volumes. We install across the major manufacturer ranges (Hunter Douglas, SAS International, Zentia, Rockfon) based on specification.
Open-cell metal grid
Open-cell metal grid systems present a cellular metal grid below the structural soffit, exposing services, soffit and acoustic backing above and giving an industrial visual language at lower weight than full-tile systems. They suit restaurants, retail flagships, gym interiors and higher-specification back-of-house volumes where the design intent is to expose rather than conceal the structure above.
Bespoke shaped metal
Bespoke shaped metal covers fully made-to-order architectural metal ceiling systems in custom geometry: faceted, curved, polygonal, decagon and other shaped feature ceilings where standard product ranges do not fit the brief. These are coordinated with the manufacturer's technical team at design stage and procured against a setting-out drawing developed against the architect's RCP.
Compliance and standards
Metal ceiling systems are governed by overlapping standards. Reaction-to-fire of standard powder-coated steel and aluminium is typically Euroclass A1 or A2-s1,d0 to EN 13501-1, the highest available, because the constituent metal does not contribute to fire growth. This is one of the principal drivers behind metal specification in transport, escape routes and high-occupancy public space. Membrane fire performance of complete ceiling assemblies is a separate test (BS 476: Part 23, BS EN 1364-2). Acoustic absorption of perforated metal with backing is reported under BS EN ISO 11654 as the weighted αw, with the published Class A, B, C, D, E grading; well-specified perforated metal with mineral wool backing typically achieves Class A.
The wider FIS Site Guide governs installation tolerances and grid alignment standards. We work to the approved manufacturer system document for every installation and follow FIS guidance on jointing, perimeter detailing and demountable access requirements.
Sectors we deliver metal ceilings for
In higher education, metal ceilings appear in lecture theatre lobbies, atria and circulation space, science and engineering laboratories, and any building with high M&E density above the ceiling line. The standard specification is perforated metal plank or tile from SAS International or Hunter Douglas with mineral wool backing.
In transport, cultural and high-occupancy public space, metal is often the default specification: Class A1 or A2 reaction-to-fire from the constituent product, durable face, demountable for service access. Hunter Douglas 84R linear and shaped sits at the higher-specification end of this category, including our installation at the BCA Birmingham auction hall as a faceted decagon feature ceiling.
In commercial offices and corporate reception, metal plank and tile feature in higher-specification fit-out programmes: Cat A and Cat B work where the brief calls for a metal visual language rather than mineral fibre.
In retail and leisure flagships, metal ceilings appear in higher-specification stores, food and beverage interiors and premium gym environments where durability, hygiene and the metal visual language combine.
Why Eastledge for metal ceilings
We have been installing commercial ceilings since 1986, working from our Derby head office and delivering across the UK. Metal ceilings sit inside our suspended-ceiling specialism and are delivered by the same crews that install mineral fibre, timber and acoustic systems, which means the metal package is sequenced into the wider fit-out programme by people who understand the integration with M&E first-fix, lighting, sprinklers and acoustic strategy. We employ our own fixers and supervisors directly. We have documented past projects installing Hunter Douglas (84R linear and shaped) and SAS International (tile, plank and bespoke) across higher education, transport, cultural and corporate environments. Specification is system-led: we install to the manufacturer's tested assemblies, work to FIS Site Guide tolerances, and coordinate the install method with the architect's RCP and the principal contractor's master programme.
Recent metal ceiling projects
Recent metal ceiling work includes the BCA Birmingham auction hall, where we installed Hunter Douglas 84R linear metal as the feature ceiling, set out as a faceted decagon geometry across the high-occupancy public auction volume. At the Aston Student Union in Birmingham, perforated metal tile was installed as part of the higher-specification student social space ceiling package. At Pioneer Park Dock 2 in Leicester, perforated metal plank with backing was specified across the Class A office floorplate where service access and acoustic performance were combined requirements.
Metal ceiling installation across the UK
Although our head office is in Alvaston, Derby, we deliver metal ceiling installations across the United Kingdom. Recent metal work has reached Birmingham (BCA Birmingham, Aston Student Union), Leicester (Pioneer Park Dock 2) and projects across the wider Midlands, with crews mobilised from Derby for installation across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
