Savers, The Mall Blackburn: Suspended Ceiling Fit-Out

Client
Savers Health and Beauty
Location
Blackburn, Lancashire

Savers Health and Beauty has a national estate of discount health and beauty stores across the UK town centre and retail park network. This project delivered the suspended ceiling fit-out for Savers at The Mall Blackburn, a covered town-centre shopping mall in Lancashire. Eastledge installed the ceiling grid and tiles throughout the store, with services coordinated into the grid and the installation managed within the mall's contractor access programme.

The brief

Discount health and beauty retail is a high-volume, cost-conscious sector. Store fit-outs are delivered to a repeatable brand specification, and the ceiling is part of that specification: consistent grid and tile, services integrated cleanly, perimeter trims neat and the whole installation completed to programme alongside the other fit-out trades. The ceiling is not the centrepiece of the design brief in a discount retail environment, but it needs to be right: a ceiling that is inconsistent, poorly trimmed or with services sitting untidily in the grid reads as a poorly executed fit-out, which is not the impression a national retailer wants to leave in a store that will trade for a decade before refurbishment.

The Mall Blackburn adds the shopping centre management layer to the standard retail fit-out brief. Access times, deliveries, waste management and coordination with adjacent tenants are all managed through the centre's contractor protocols, and the fit-out programme has to be built around those constraints from the outset.

What we did

Suspended ceiling grid and tile

The ceiling grid was set out from the agreed services layout, with lighting, ventilation and detection positions agreed before the grid was installed. In a retail ceiling, setting out the grid against the services plan before installation is the step that produces a clean finished result: when services positions are confirmed in advance, each luminaire, grille and detector can land within the module, and the finished ceiling presents a consistent plane rather than a grid that has been cut around services installed after the fact.

The tile specification provides a durable, low-maintenance ceiling appropriate for a high-traffic retail environment. Discount retail stores carry significant footfall and a maintenance regime that needs straightforward access to services above the ceiling. The grid and tile system supports that: tiles can be lifted individually for services access without disturbing the rest of the installation, and the specification is a standard reference that is straightforward to source for replacement when needed.

Perimeter trims at wall and pillar junctions were installed neatly throughout, and services were integrated flush within the grid plane. The finished ceiling reads as consistent across the full store area.

How we worked

The installation was delivered within The Mall's contractor access schedule, which is standard practice for shopping centre fit-out work. Centre management sets the windows during which contractors can work, deliver materials and remove waste, and the programme is built around those windows from the start of the project.

The ceiling installation was sequenced alongside the other fit-out trades in the store, with services positions confirmed before the ceiling grid was set out. Keeping the ceiling scope in sequence with the mechanical and electrical trades is the key programme management discipline on retail fit-outs: a ceiling installed before services positions are finalised creates remedial work; a ceiling that waits on late services delivery falls behind programme. The coordination was managed from the outset to avoid both.

All operatives held current CSCS cards and appropriate qualifications for retail fit-out environments within managed shopping centres.

Outcome

A completed suspended ceiling fit-out throughout the Savers store at The Mall Blackburn, delivered to the brand specification and programme within the mall's managed environment. The grid and tile installation presents a consistent, clean ceiling appropriate for a high-footfall discount health and beauty retailer, with services properly integrated and perimeter trims finished throughout.

The project is part of Eastledge's broader retail ceiling programme work, delivering repeatable suspended ceiling fit-outs for national retailers across the UK.
