Altro is a UK-headquartered manufacturer with a long heritage in safety flooring and hygienic wall cladding, established in Hertford in 1919. The Whiterock range is the company's flagship hygienic PVCu wall cladding system — 2.5 mm semi-rigid PVCu sheet, HACCP-certified, food-safe and grout-free, with a 30-year life expectancy on the standard White line and a 20-year system guarantee on the wider range. Whiterock is widely specified across NHS healthcare estates, food manufacturing and processing facilities, hospitality kitchens, education catering and washroom environments, and pharmaceutical cleanrooms.

The Whiterock product family

Altro Whiterock White is the core specification: smooth, impervious 2.5 mm PVCu sheet in standard white, HACCP-certified and designed to meet the wall-surface requirements of food safety legislation and NHS infection-control guidance. Whiterock White is the market reference product for hygienic wall cladding in the UK — the product that most food production clients, NHS estates teams and food safety consultants have in mind when they specify "Whiterock" as a generic. The sheet format is wide (minimising joint frequency relative to ceramic tiling) and the sheets are heat-formable, allowing coved internal and external corners and continuous wall-to-wall finishes without capping strips at every junction.

Altro Whiterock Satins extends the colour range with a matt finish palette, designed for environments where a softer visual is required — healthcare corridors, leisure changing rooms, hospitality back-of-house — without reducing hygienic performance below the standard Whiterock specification.

Altro Whiterock Chameleon provides patterned and decorative finishes (stone, tile and abstract print effects) for environments where the wall cladding contributes to the interior scheme. The same PVCu substrate delivers full Whiterock hygienic performance with an aesthetic that avoids the clinical-white default.

Altro Whiterock Splashbacks are pre-cut panels providing a seamless, grout-free splash zone without the full-wall installation of standard sheet cladding — used at clinical handwash stations, commercial kitchen splashback zones and school washroom splashback areas.

Altro Whiterock Digiclad is a bespoke digitally printed panel combining custom artwork — wayfinding graphics, brand identity, environmental imagery — with full Whiterock hygienic performance. Digiclad is used where the brief requires both a hygienic surface and a branded or distinctive visual character on the same wall plane.

Technical characteristics

Whiterock sheets are heat-formable, allowing site-formed coved corners and continuous wall-to-wall finishes without grout lines or capping strips at every joint. This is one of the material's key practical advantages in healthcare installation: a thermoformed coved corner eliminates the junction gap where moisture, bacteria and cleaning chemical residue accumulate at tiled walls. The Whiterock system meets EU and British guidelines for wall finishes in food preparation and processing areas. Altro publish a 30-year life expectancy on Whiterock White and a 20-year system guarantee on the wider range.

The system is HACCP-certified, confirming suitability for use in food preparation environments under Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points management frameworks. For NHS estates, Whiterock is widely specified to satisfy HTM 61 series performance requirements for clinical area wall finishes.

How Eastledge installs Whiterock

Eastledge's dedicated hygienic cladding team installs Whiterock to the Altro published installation method. Substrate preparation is the first step: the wall surface must be sound, flat and free of contamination — on plasterboard this means a correctly taped and jointed face; on masonry or block it may require a render or plasterboard lining layer first. Sheets are adhesive bonded using an approved system, with sheet-to-sheet joints chemically welded to produce a continuous, seamless surface. Thermoformed profiles are used at internal and external corners. Perimeter trims at the floor and ceiling junction use sanitary coved profiles, eliminating the moisture and bacteria accumulation point that standard tiled wall bases create.
