What does EI 30, EI 60, EI 90 and EI 120 mean?

The EI classification denotes the performance of a fire-rated partition under BS EN 1364-1 test conditions: E for integrity (the ability to prevent passage of flames and hot gases) and I for insulation (the ability to limit temperature rise on the unexposed face). The number is the duration in minutes for which both criteria are maintained: EI 30 for 30 minutes, EI 60 for 60 minutes, EI 90 for 90 minutes, EI 120 for two hours. The appropriate rating for each partition location is determined by the building's fire strategy, the approved document B compliance route and, on complex buildings, by the fire engineer appointed to the project.

Why does a fire-rated partition require a complete tested assembly?

Accepted Answer

The EI rating is a property of the complete assembly as tested, not of any individual component. Every element must match the tested configuration: stud gauge and centres, board specification and number of layers, fixing type and centres, mineral wool specification and density, perimeter detailing at head and base, and junction with the floor slab. Substituting a nominally equivalent board, changing the stud spacing, or omitting an insulation layer may invalidate the tested assembly and therefore the EI rating that the building's fire strategy relies on. This is why we install exclusively to the manufacturer's current system document, not to estimated equivalences, and why we reference the system document in the O&M record.

What happens at service penetrations through a fire-rated partition?

Accepted Answer

Every penetration through a fire-rated partition (electrical conduit, data cable, plumbing pipe, HVAC duct, structural sleeve) must be firestopped to maintain the compartment integrity at the penetration. The firestopping product and method must be from an approved system with tested performance for the penetration type at the partition EI rating. Firestopping at penetrations is a separate specialist trade and is not part of the Eastledge scope; we coordinate with the principal contractor's appointed firestopping specialist at pre-construction to identify all penetrations in advance and sequence the partition installation around their work.

How do fire-rated partitions relate to building regulations?

Accepted Answer

Fire-rated partitions are required by Approved Document B (fire safety in buildings) to form compartment walls between different building uses, between storeys, between occupancies in multi-let buildings, and to enclose escape routes, lift shafts and services risers. The required EI rating at each location is specified in the fire strategy, which is prepared by the architect or fire engineer and approved by the building control authority. We work to the fire strategy document, confirm the required EI rating for each partition location before procurement, and provide system reference documentation for the building's O&M file.
