What is Troldtekt?

Troldtekt is a Danish manufacturer of cement-bonded wood wool acoustic panels, producing products in Humlebaek, Denmark since 1935. The panels are made from spruce wood shavings sourced from sustainably managed Nordic forests, bound with Portland cement and compressed into panels with an open, textured surface. The result is a panel that absorbs sound, resists fire, and presents a warm natural surface in contrast to the mineral fibre alternatives that dominate most UK commercial ceiling and wall specifications.

Acoustic performance

Troldtekt panels achieve Class A absorption when used in correctly designed ceiling and wall assemblies. Sound enters the open wood wool surface, passes into the matrix of cement-bonded fibres, and dissipates. The open structure absorbs across a wide frequency range with particular effectiveness at mid and low frequencies where mineral fibre tiles can underperform. For projects where the acoustic brief includes low-frequency reverberation control or where the specification calls for a tested Class A system from a natural material, Troldtekt is a credible option alongside the standard mineral fibre alternatives.

Sustainability credentials

Troldtekt publishes an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its core panel ranges, covering embodied carbon, renewable raw material content and end-of-life data. The wood wool core comes from sustainably certified Nordic spruce; the manufacturing process uses renewable energy at the Danish factory. The panels are fully recyclable at end of life and the thermal mass of the cement matrix can contribute to energy performance in naturally ventilated environments. Troldtekt is most commonly specified in education (classrooms, sports halls, school halls, lecture theatres), offices (collaboration areas, breakout and social spaces, entrance lobbies), cultural buildings (galleries, community halls, visitor attractions) and healthcare (waiting areas, corridor environments, rehabilitation spaces). The natural wood wool surface is a practical choice when biophilic design or visible natural materials are part of the design brief, and the Class A acoustic performance means the material is not a compromise on performance relative to mineral fibre.
