What is taping and jointing?

Taping and jointing (T&J) is the finishing process that converts a fixed plasterboard surface into a smooth, flat, decoratable face. It involves bedding paper or fibreglass tape over board joints, filling and feathering with specialist joint compound across three or more coats, and sanding flat between coats. The result is a seamless face ready for mist coat and decoration. T&J is the standard modern UK finish for commercial dry lining on metal stud partitions and plasterboard ceiling linings.

What is the difference between taping and jointing and plastering?

Both processes produce a smooth decoratable face over plasterboard, but by different means. Taping and jointing builds up multiple thin coats of joint compound over the board joints specifically, feathered out to blend with the board face, leaving the boards themselves as the primary substrate. Traditional skim plastering applies a continuous 2 to 3 mm coat of finishing plaster across the entire board face, covering both boards and joints uniformly. T&J is faster and produces less wet material on site, which is why it has become the commercial standard for most offices, education, retail and healthcare work. Skim plastering is still specified where a continuous monolithic face is required or where the architect prefers it, but T&J is the workhorse finish for modern UK dry lining.

What are Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5 finishes?

The levels refer to the surface quality achieved after taping and jointing, defined by the British Gypsum White Book and widely adopted across the industry. Level 3 is a standard commercial finish appropriate for textured coatings and heavy decoration where surface flatness is not critical. Level 4 is the standard for most commercial fit-out: smooth, flat, suitable for light-sheen paints and standard decoration without surface defects visible under normal lighting. Level 5 is the highest quality, requiring a skim coat or proprietary finish coat over the jointed boards to eliminate any remaining joint shadow under critical lighting conditions such as raking light in executive offices, showrooms and display environments. We deliver Level 4 as our commercial default and Level 5 where the specification requires it.

How does taping and jointing integrate with the rest of the dry lining package?

T&J is the final trade step before decoration in a standard dry lining sequence. The partition or lining frame is built, the first and second boards are fixed, and T&J follows directly behind the board-fixers. Where the same contractor holds both dry lining and T&J (as we do), the sequence runs continuously under one site supervisor: frame, first board layer, second board layer where applicable, tape and joint, handover to decoration. Splitting the two trades between separate contractors introduces a handover gap that typically generates snagging, re-visit costs and programme delay at the joint.

What manufacturers and products do you use?

We work to British Gypsum (Gyproc jointing compounds), Knauf and Siniat approved joint compound specifications. Product selection follows the architect's specification and the substrate; we are not tied to a single supplier. The Gyproc EasiFill, Gyproc Jointing Compound and Thistle Finishing Plaster ranges cover the volume of our T&J work alongside Knauf and Siniat equivalents.

Can you deliver taping and jointing in occupied buildings?

Accepted Answer

Yes, T&J in occupied commercial buildings is part of our refurbishment capacity. Joint compound generates less airborne dust than sanding without extraction, and the process is lower-disruption than many other fit-out trades. We sequence in zones with temporary enclosures, arrange dust extraction during sanding operations, and coordinate out-of-hours work where room occupation prevents daytime access. Method statements for occupied-building programmes are produced at pre-start and agreed with the client's facilities team.
