Glazed Partitions
Aluminium-framed glazed partition systems for offices and meeting rooms
What we do
We design, supply and install aluminium-framed glazed partition systems for commercial offices, meeting rooms, education and healthcare environments throughout the UK. Single and double-glazed systems, including fire-rated glazed assemblies where the fire strategy requires transparency at a compartment boundary.
What glazed partitions do
Glazed partition systems use an aluminium framing profile to hold single or double-glazed panels in a continuous wall, creating enclosed rooms and meeting spaces that remain visually open to adjacent areas. In commercial offices, glazed partitions form meeting rooms, boardrooms, executive offices and breakout spaces without the visual weight of solid stud construction. In education, they create classroom observation walls and borrowed-light screens in teaching and administration areas. In healthcare, they provide visual separation between waiting and reception areas while allowing supervision across the zone.
The principal performance drivers are acoustic isolation (how much sound the partition attenuates between the enclosed room and the adjacent space), fire rating (whether the partition must maintain compartment integrity at a fire boundary), and visual specification (frame profile, glass type, hardware and any manifestation or manifestation requirements).
Construction and materials
Standard systems use an extruded aluminium frame at the perimeter and intermediate mullions, with single or double-glazed infill panels set into the frame using dry gaskets or structural silicone. The base channel is fixed to the structural floor or screed; the head track is fixed to the soffit or ceiling structure. Intermediate stud mullions carry the load of the panels between head and base.
Single-skin systems with 6 mm float glass are the lightest and most cost-effective option for borrowed-light screens and low-acoustic-requirement boundaries. Double-skin systems with a 40 to 60 mm air gap or acoustic interlayer laminate upgrade the acoustic performance significantly and are the standard specification for meeting rooms where speech privacy matters.
Frame finishes are typically powder-coated aluminium in a specified RAL colour, anodised aluminium, or stainless steel hardware where the brand standard or specification requires it.
Fire-rated glazed systems
Fire-rated glazed partitions use specially rated glazing products (borosilicate glass, Pyrobel or equivalent intumescent-filled glass) within a tested steel or aluminium frame assembly to achieve EI 30 or EI 60 ratings. The rating covers both integrity (no passage of flame and hot gases) and insulation (limited temperature rise on the unexposed face), which is what the EI classification means.
Fire-rated glazed systems are specified at compartment boundaries where the architect or fire engineer requires transparency at a fire wall: escape route glazed screens, separation between different occupancies at a fire boundary, or staircase enclosures where the design calls for a glazed wall rather than a solid one.
We install fire-rated glazed partitions to the approved manufacturer system documentation and coordinate with the fire engineer, building control and the firestopping contractor at the head, base and any penetrations through the partition.
Where glazed partitions are used
In offices, glazed partitions form the cellular meeting rooms, executive offices and boardrooms that characterise Cat B fit-out on commercial office floorplates. The combination of visual openness and acoustic separation is the defining brief for most office glazed partition work.
In education, glazed partitions create observation screens in teaching areas, borrowed-light screens between offices and corridors, and visual supervision screens in special educational needs and early years environments.
In healthcare, glazed screens separate reception and waiting zones, create visual supervision lines in clinical areas, and form consultation room screens where visual privacy and acoustic separation are both required at different levels.
How we deliver glazed partitions
Glazed partitions are typically one component of a wider partition and dry lining package. We deliver them alongside our solid stud partition work under the same site team and programme, which means the coordination between the glazed partition head track fixing and the suspended ceiling grid installation is managed internally rather than across a contractor boundary. This removes the programme risk that typically appears when solid stud partitions and glazed systems are held by separate trade contractors who each need the other's preceding work to progress.
